The Dovedale speaker, which takes its name from a picturesque valley in the Peak District, first made its appearance in 1965. Originally designed as a two-way speaker, it evolved into the Dovedale 3 in 1971. This larger, three-way version quickly gained a reputation for its rich, open, and effortless sound quality. The latest edition of the Dovedale draws inspiration from this classic design but features re-engineered components.
Despite being larger than many modern speakers, the new Dovedale was intentionally designed to move more air, resulting in a more powerful and immersive listening experience. The speaker boasts a 10" bass driver and a 5" midrange driver, both with cones made from woven Kevlar, a strong and stiff material that resists warping. The midrange driver has its own internal enclosure to prevent vibrations from the bass driver from affecting its performance.
The 25mm tweeter, a staple of the Wharfedale classic series, features a fabric dome and ceramic magnet. In the new Dovedale edition, it has been improved with a rear chamber that has been damped to prevent any output from the back of the dome. This results in a reduced resonant frequency that ensures treble detail is preserved without affecting the smoothness of the sound.
The cabinet design of the Dovedale is carefully damped using acoustic foam and long hair fiber to ensure a smooth response. The bass unit has a ported enclosure that allows for bass extension down to 25Hz, while a combination of woods cancels out any panel resonances. The cabinet construction uses a sandwich of high-density particle board and MDF, separated by a damping membrane of specially selected glue. Finally, the cabinet is covered with real-wood veneers, hand-polished, and lacquered to give a satin finish. Each cabinet is carefully matched to ensure consistency in sound quality.
