Introducing PS Audio Aspen FR5: Compact High-Performance Stand-Mounted Loudspeakers
PS Audio has unveiled the aspen FR5, a stand-mounted loudspeaker designed to deliver the same extraordinary musical realism as its larger aspen Series counterparts, but in a compact form that suits smaller and medium-sized rooms.
The new FR5 is equipped with a custom-designed PS Audio push-pull planar magnetic high-frequency driver, a newly-designed midrange/woofer, and a high-excursion passive radiator. Available in satin black or satin white, with optional matching stands, the PS Audio FR5 is designed to seamlessly blend with any décor.
Paul McGowan, CEO of PS Audio, emphasized, “The FR5 was crafted to bring the same level of uncompromising sound quality as all aspen Series speakers into any listening environment. It’s perfect for spaces where floorstanding speakers aren’t practical. Despite its size, the FR5 delivers powerful, dynamic sound with extended bass, and can play surprisingly loud even in larger rooms.”
Measuring 14.5 inches high by 8 inches wide by 13 inches deep (or 28.25 inches high with the optional stands), the FR5 is designed for optimal performance in a two-way stand-mount configuration. It features a 2.5-inch planar magnetic ribbon tweeter, the same one used in all aspen Series loudspeakers, with a symmetrical push-pull design, a high-strength magnet, and a diaphragm made from Teonex® film for exceptional clarity and transient response.
The FR5 also boasts a newly-designed 6.5-inch cast frame midrange/woofer made from Curv woven polypropylene, a material drawn into thin monofilaments, woven, and reinforced using a proprietary process. This high-excursion driver features a split-gap magnet structure with dual Faraday rings and a custom suspension, augmented by a rear-firing 6 by 9-inch passive radiator to extend low-frequency response down to 30 Hz. Both drivers are mounted on a thermoset resin front baffle that enhances rigidity and reduces diffraction effects.
The FR5’s enclosure utilizes new technology, incorporating viscoelastic damping sheets between the bracing and cabinet side walls and around the woofer to minimize unwanted vibrations, resulting in superb imaging and spaciousness. The crossover network features air-core inductors, metallized poly capacitors, and wirewound resistors to ensure maximum sonic purity and seamless driver integration.
The simple, elegant design of the FR5 is enhanced by its optional matching stand, which includes an integrated wire management system and can be mass-loaded. The FR5 also comes with magnetically detachable grilles.
The aspen FR5 will be available in August 2024 at a retail price of £3495 per pair, with the optional stands available for £500 per pair.
