New Products From PS Audio To Transform Your Listening!

Due to the cold snap, it's likely that many of us are listening to music more often than usual to enjoy the cosy warmth of a winter evening. The audio industry continues making advancements, especially at P.S. Audio in Colorado. Right now, they are introducing three new products that are sure to excite fans of high-end Hi-Fi.

  1. The Aspen FR20 loudspeakers, a state-of-the-art full range loudspeaker system with extraordinary low distortion, effortless reproduction, seamless tonality and exquisite beauty.
  1. BHK 600 mono blocks, PS Audio’s ultimate expression on art of audio amplification with the pure brute force of their massive 1.6kva power supply smoothed by 336,000 microfarads of capacitance to the delicate beauty of its vacuum tube rectification these amplifiers represent the pinnacle of high end hifi amplification
  1. The eagerly awaited successor to PS Audio’s multi-award winning reference DirectStream DAC, the imaginatively named DirectStream DAC Mark 2, is now available to order. Our distributor who has his demo unit informs us that the increase in sonic performance is huge.

The Aspen FR20s are the little brothers to the relatively newly released and “Outstanding Product” award Aspen FR30s. They have the same elegant style as their bigger counterparts, but in a single box instead of the double box for the FR30s. We have installed two pairs of the 30s and expect the 20s to be a popular speaker. They are a highly resolute pair of speakers, with a strong bass and great balance.

Driver configuration includes two 10” side-firing passive radiators, a 2.5” planar magnetic diaphragm as the high frequency driver, and a 10” planar magnetic driver for the as the mid band.

There are two 8” carbon fibre woofers using a 6kg advanced magnet structure for the low frequencies.

The crossover frequency is 400 Hz-2500 Hz, with a steep 4th order crossover.

Sensitivity is 87 dB (2.83v @ 1m), the nominal impedance of 4 ohms and the recommended amplifier power is 50-300W. The in-room frequency response is 20 Hz-20 kHz. These small speakers are still big, with dimensions of 50.5” x 16” x 18.75” and a weight of 60.3 kg.

If you want to audition a pair of the speakers, please get in touch. If you want to hear them in your own system, or indeed audition the 30s, please let us know.

Well Paul Likes them… and so do we

Paul McGowan said “The BHK 600 is a statement product that conveys music with extraordinary clarity, resolution, and musical accuracy. But mostly, authority. In my nearly fifty years of high-end audio, I’ve never heard any amplifier take command as does the mighty BHK 600.”

Winner of the “Outstanding Product” award in Hifi News these power amplifiers are something to behold. I had to lift them into the van, so I have mixed feelings about them physically, but they sound amazing!

The BHK 600 delivers 600W into 8 ohms and 1,500W into 4 ohms. It has balanced XLR and single-ended RCA inputs and is powered by two vacuum tubes and a rectifier tube. A tube rectifier is used because it reduces switch-mode noise found in solid-state rectifiers for better sound.

The BHK 600 has a powerful 1.6kVA separate output-stage transformer, 300,000µF capacitance, multiple mosfet output devices and more than 100 damping factor. It also has gold-plated copper binding posts for bi-wiring and a monitoring microprocessor with protection circuitry. It features idle mode for optimal sound. They sound huge, dynamic, and controlled, and we are going to set them up with the FR20 as soon as we get a moment.

Please come and have a listen, but we do need some warning to get them into the demo room.

The PS Audio DirectStream DAC MK2 is a high-end digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) and preamplifier that uses an FPGA rather than an off-the-shelf chipset. This gives the designers control over the whole process and allows for firmware updates to enhance the performance of the device over time. Delighted owners of the original DirectStream DAC will know, with each firmware release the sonic performance is increased. Firmware releases are free and with the new DirectStream DAC MK2 these firmware releases can be stored within and customers can select their preferred version as and when they want. The DAC converts all input signals to a high-sample-rate 50-bit version, which is then converted to pure DSD and then to analogue. The DirectStream DAC MK2 can accommodate PCM sources up to 705.6 kHz and DSD up to 256. It is also fully balanced from input to output, and features a remote control, so it can be partnered with a power amplifier like the BHK 250 thus avoiding the need for a preamplifier.

We have our demonstrator on the way, if you wish to know what your DAC is worth in part exchange, please drop us a line?
