Introducing the M8xTT Turntable by Musical Fidelity: A Modern High-End Masterpiece Inspired by a Legend
Behold the Musical Fidelity M8xTT Turntable, a striking embodiment of high-end craftsmanship that seamlessly blends mass and isolation-focused engineering. This exceptional turntable boasts a bespoke 10” tonearm, a multi-layered plinth, and a substantial aluminum platter.
The Genesis: Musical Fidelity M1
In 2002, when Antony Michaelson, the then-owner of Musical Fidelity, embarked on a quest for a groundbreaking concept, he sought the expertise of Heinz Lichtenegger. Their mission was to create a genuine high-end turntable that mirrored the aesthetics, technical prowess, and sonic qualities of Michaelson's renowned amplifiers. The result was the M1—a substantial record player that harnessed top-tier engineering to achieve Michaelson's exacting performance standards.
Now, under the ownership of Heinz Lichtenegger, Musical Fidelity revisits this project, aiming to resurrect the turntable as a new model, leveraging improved modern techniques and materials.
Unveiling the Musical Fidelity M8xTT Turntable
The M8xTT is packed with remarkable features, including a dual-acrylic chassis that effectively isolates the motor support from the tonearm mounting. It showcases a brand-new 10” aluminum tonearm from Musical Fidelity, complete with azimuth and VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) adjustment capabilities. Additionally, it boasts a decoupled motor assembly, a dual-layer main platter enhanced with aluminum joint inserts, and height-adjustable feet.
This exquisite turntable offers both RCA and XLR output terminals and includes a leather mat and a substantial aluminum puck. Notably, every Musical Fidelity M8xTT is meticulously handcrafted in Europe.
The Ingenious Dual-Layer Plinth
The M8xTT's dual-layer plinth is constructed from non-resonant acrylic, elegantly perched atop four height-adjustable magnetic feet with Teflon spacers nestled between the layers. The upper layer plays host to the main bearing spindle and the tonearm mount, ensuring complete isolation from the dedicated drive motor, which resides on the lower plinth and is insulated from the structure by specialized foam material. The end result is a turntable that, by design, eradicates the transmission of resonances from both its surroundings and its own structure.
The Precision Drive Motor
The drive motor is linked to the TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer)-damped main platter through a silicon drive belt. The platter itself showcases a dual-layer configuration, united by aluminum inserts that amplify the flywheel effect as the platter initiates its rotation. This, combined with the motor's automatic speed change capability, seamlessly transitioning between 33 and 45rpm, culminates in a turntable that, according to Musical Fidelity, delivers "exceptional rotational stability."
A New Era for 10” Tonearms
The brand-new 10” tonearm is a custom model exclusively designed for the M8xTT by Musical Fidelity. Its ultra-low resonance design features a conical aluminum tonearm tube and a transparent acrylic bearing ring. This highly adjustable arm accommodates azimuth and VTA settings, equipped with two TPE-damped counterweights to support cartridges weighing between 6 and 20g. On the rear panel, you'll find standard RCA phono sockets, along with balanced XLR connections for versatile system integration.
The Musical Fidelity M8xTT is set to retail for £8,249 and will begin shipping in October 2023.
